Sedation Dentistry

Patients who are apprehensive about receiving dental treatment often avoid going to the dentist.  Ultimately, this avoidance can lead to advanced disease and the need for expensive treatment that could have been avoided.  Sedation Dentistry provides a safe, effective way to alleviate dental anxiety and provide you with the treatment you need.  We offer a few different options to best suits your needs.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option we can offer to help make you more comfortable during your dental procedures. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests as you breathe normally through your nose.  Within a few short minutes, you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is another form of sedation dentistry and is now the most common technique used in the United States to quell patient fears. It makes use of a prescription medication that induces a drowsy, relaxed feeling.

Due to the relaxing effects of the medication, patients must have a friend or family member bring them to the dental office and return them home.

During sedation dentistry, patient’s vital signs are monitored. We like our patients to know that often times, the medications create such a comfortable experience that many of them do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment. In reality, oral sedation dentistry maintains a level of consciousness in the patient for safety and cooperation.

IV Sedation

You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly. This method allows the dentist to continually adjust the level of sedation.

Sedation Dentistry is an excellent method of treatment for patients who have any of the following concerns:

  • Dental Anxiety/Fear of going to the Dentist
  • Difficulty Getting Numb
  • Very Sensitive Teeth
  • Extensive Dental Needs
  • Do you gag easily?
  • Discomfort with Needles and Shots

Sedation Dentistry is not for everyone. In fact, many of our patients with some dental anxiety decide not to use Sedation Dentistry. These patients often tell us that our caring, gentle approach provides them with a relaxing, pleasant experience even without sedation. The choice is really yours.
