Sedation Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

At Goodman Dental Center, the team understands and sympathizes with you if you have dental anxiety. To accommodate your needs, they provide nitrous oxide gas, prescription medications taken prior to the appointment, and/or intravenous (IV) sedation.

Different types of sedation help keep you calm and reduce your fears about seeing the dentist. Some sedation methods are stronger than others. Sedation methods vary in strength from keeping you relaxed to putting you to sleep.

While you’re sedated, your dentist keeps you comfortable, reducing your fears and anxiety about being in the dental chair.

Your dentist’s top priorities are to take care of your oral health as well as your anxious feelings. That’s why, before your procedure, your consultation involves a time of questions and answers about your needs, so you’re informed and put at ease.

What types of sedation are used?

The team at Goodman Dental Center offers many types of sedation to help ease the anxiety of your visit.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation involves your doctor giving you anti-anxiety medication to take prior to your appointment, helping you to feel calm when you arrive.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas. It’s an odorless gas that’s inhaled through your nose through a mask before and during your procedure. It helps you stay calm and even happy.

Intravenous (IV) conscious sedation

IV sedation is administered by giving you an IV drip of a mild sedative that’s delivered directly to your bloodstream. It allows you to sleep or not remember your procedure at all. The dosage amount is customized specifically for your needs.

Your dentist recommends you have a driver to and from your procedure when using any form of sedation.
